Upgrade to a new version doesn't affect the wallet located on your system. It should be, however, a good practice to backup you wallet, just in case anything happens with your system.

If you have a version of the Infinitecoin-Qt software running, simply go to File / Backup Wallet menu and specify a location where you want to backup your wallet.

The file itself is called wallet.dat and is located in C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Infinitecoin\wallet.dat on Windows systems or in ~/.infinitecoin/wallet.dat
You can back that up by simply copying this file somewhere else, preferably to the offline storage such as USB drive.

Once you have made the backup of your wallet file, simply install a new version of the software. The installer will not touch the wallet.dat file and when new version starts, it will upgrade your wallet file. Your private addresses will remain untouched and thus your coins and your wallet will remain the same.

Keep in mind that depending on the version to which you are upgrading, new wallet and new blockchain database files may not be backward compatible. This means that once you have upgraded to a new version (for example going from 1.2 to 1.3) there is no going back (unless you have a wallet file backed up before upgrade).

Remember, always protect your wallet with a passphrase! There have been cases of people not remembering their passphrase, so make sure the passphrase is something you will never forget! There are trojan viruses out there that simply try to upload your wallet file to a remote location where hackers will instantly have access to your funds if the wallet is not passphrase protected.

I keep downloading it from the infinitecoin.org site.
It SAYS it is version 1.6 (which I should be downloading version 1.7) and when you install it, it becomes version 1.5.

so WTF, guys?
That's a good trick, telling us we HAVE to update to 1.7, but 1.7 doesn't exist, niether does version 1.6.

Either keep this shit legit and have the updates available and where they are SUPPOSED to be or just get rid of infcoin altogether.
Do you know how ridiculous this is?
And try naming each as 1.5, 1.6, etc, so we know what we are running, without having to bring it up.

NONE have a correct link to version 1.6 or 1.7, period.

click the link to 1.7 and it takes you to version 1.6, which is actually version 1.5.
