I was previously able to do solo mining (although it was on the wrong block chain). After getting a new wallet, I am not able to get any shares when solo mining for a full day. Is there any solution to this, or is this expected.

This is normal. When you were mining the wrong blockchain, it was set to a much lower difficulty. In reality if you were on the real chain you would have generated blocks far less often. Going a few days without a block is normal on the correct chain.
